The
Peoples Democratic Party has commended the nation’s political leaders
for uniting against terrorism, irrespective of party affiliations.
This is contained in a statement issued by Mr. Olisa Metuh, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, on Saturday in Abuja.
It described the development as unprecedented in contemporary Nigerian history.
The statement said that the coming
together of the leaders to present a common front on issues of
terrorism, spoke volumes, especially on the unity of the country.
Metuh said that the development was also a strong message to those behind acts of terrorism and violence in the country.
The party`s spokesman maintained
that the development had restored the confidence reposed in the
political class to provide leadership direction for the nation.
He said the development was the only
way to move the nation forward, adding that it has united the political
leaders and rekindled the spirit of oneness among Nigerians.
The national publicity secretary
said it had also revived faith in the Nigerian project which was
hitherto threatened by unhealthy dissensions.
Metuh commended President Goodluck
Jonathan for his untiring efforts in fighting terrorism, noting that the
successful National Security Council meeting has created the platform
for unity among political leaders.
“Our political class has shown its commitment to the unity and greatness of our dear country, it has shamed doomsday prophets.’’
According to him, such prophets
relentlessly work against the country’s unity by stoking the fires of
hatred and dissensions and predicting disaster and countless negatives
against the country.
Metuh, however, called on Nigerians
to remain vigilant and to continue to stand against actions that
encouraged violence and terrorism.
“The challenges facing the nation
are transitory and cannot defeat the collective spirit of the Nigerian
people and their proven determination to live as one.
“The PDP believes in Nigeria and
Nigerians. We believe that our country will emerge out of these
challenges a renewed, stronger and more united Nigeria.
“The time has therefore come for all
citizens to look ahead and join hands in love to build a prosperous
country where all will live in peace and unity irrespective of ethnic,
religious and political differences,’’ Metuh said.
He added that the PDP, as the ruling
party, would continue to provide a level play ground for all citizens
in line with its manifesto, ideology and the vision of its founding
fathers.
This, he said, was to ensure that
citizens advanced their views and aspirations without compromising the
overall interest and unity of the nation.
