Lagos State Govt. Recovers Millions from Tax Defaulters

Lagos - Lagos State Government says it has sued more than 800 tax defaulters and recovered N160 million.  

Special Adviser to the Governor on Taxation and Revenue, Bola Shodipo, disclosed this at a Ministerial news briefing in Lagos.

He said that the 863 distrain cases of tax evaders were filed at the High Court of Lagos.

Shodipo said out of the figure, 413 made orders to  the government to collect stacked taxes from the defaulters.

“863 Distrain cases were filed at the High Court of Lagos State out of which 413 court orders to Distrain were pursued and this translated to payments into the State coffers,” he said.

Shodipo added that the Lagos Internal Revenue Servive (LIRS) was  also working on high net-worth individual defaulters in order to retrieve taxes from them.


 “Some of them are presently being prosecuted while a lot of others have opted out of court for full compliance on their tax liabilities with the attendant penalty payments for defaulting in the first place,” he explained.

On issuance of electronic tax clearance certificate, the special adviser said the total number of registered taxpayers in Lagos State increased from 3.48 million to 4.21 million in 2013.

“The Agency has identified 65 572 taxpayers in the organized private sector without Electronic Tax Clearance Certificate (e-TCC) Cards.
