Introduction

When you are planning to use a computer as a workstation is a network, you should make sure that computer meets the necessary requirements. In some cases, it may only meet the hardware requirements without any software. In some cases, something could be missing. In previous lessons, we cover the issues related to making sure that the computer was ready. In some other cases, you may plan to purchase brand new computers that you would use to build your network.

  

How to Use a BlackBerry With Laptop for Internet Connection.

Although laptops are certainly convenient, if you need to be online all the time, it can be difficult to locate and use public Wi-Fi if you are always on the go. However, if you have a BlackBerry smartphone, you can use it with your laptop to connect to the Internet. Although you have to be conscious of any fees associated with using your BlackBerry to connect to the Internet, it is a nice way to keep yourself constantly connected on the go. 

INSTRUCTION 

 1. Call your phone service provider. Although your BlackBerry already has modem functionality included, this will need to be "activated." Make sure to ask about any additional usage charges you will incur as a result of activating this service. 

2 Download the modem/Blackberry management software for your device. Every carrier has their own unique software to use, and you will either have to download it from your carrier's website (this is the most common option) or go to your carrier's location and pick up a CD with the program on it. 

3. Once you have installed the software, restart your computer.

A workstation is a computer that is a member of a network. At homes and small businesses, the most regular operating system, at the time of this writing, is probably Microsoft 

Windows XP Home Edition. Other regularly used operating systems from Microsoft are Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Windows 9X, and Microsoft Windows 2000

 Professional. On this site, we will mostly cover Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

When preparing to get or acquire your workstations, you may be in one of the following scenarios.

Using New Computers

If you get a contract to build a network for a small business or you are going to create a new network for a home, you may decide to purchase brand new computers. If you haven't  bought the computer(s) but are planning to, refer to our section on purchasing or acquiring new computers in the Lesson 4.

Believe it or not, your toddler’s volume isn’t turned up high to annoy you, but because she’s exploring the power of the voice, and experimenting with what she can do with it.

Shouting at your toddler to lower her voice won’t help. It’ll just send the message that whoever shouts loudest wins. Pick toddler-friendly item and places

Whenever you can, work around your toddler and her sleep, and food needs. Try to make sure she’s well rested and head a bite to eat before you leave the house. If you were tired and hungry, you wouldn’t have the patience for shopping, either.

When you’re out with your toddler, stay away from quiet, intimate or formal places. Instead, go where other families go.

EXCUSES THAT SHOULDN’T STOP YOUR IDEAS

I’ve heard every excuse in the book from my students about why they’re unable to turn their ideas into reality. But the only way to succeed at becoming an entrepreneur is to have the courage to take that first, small step. If folks walked into our houses, would the fragrance of Christ be present? Do people look at our marriages and see and smell the aroma of Christ?

I believe there are two factors that give a marriage the fragrance of Christ – that make it distinctively Christian. And both are impossible without the transforming grace of God.

Microsoft has finally posted official (if partial) guidance on overcoming the seven most common errors when installing the must-have Windows 8.1 Update.

It only took six weeks, but Microsoft Technical Advisor Paul Sey has published definitive guidance on overcoming the seven most common errors that people encounter when trying to install Windows 8.1 Update -- better and more accurately known as KB 2919355. That patch, you may recall, is a prerequisite for receiving any additional Windows 8.1 patches, starting next month.

Sey doesn't promise that the suggested fixes will work in all cases. But at least it's a step in the right direction, particularly for Windows 8.1 customers who have been pounding away at the problem, under threat of excommunication, for weeks.

Google to Unite Work and Pleasure by Acquiring Divide

Divide consolidates work and personal apps on people's own mobile devices

Google could gain a stronger position in businesses by acquiring Divide, an enterprise software company focused on the bring-your-own-device to work model.

Divide said Monday that it was being acquired by Google, and that its members would be joining Google's Android team.

Terms were not disclosed. Google declined to provide further comment.

Divide, formerly known as Enterproid, has attracted Google's interest for some time. Last October the company announced $12 million in series B funding led by Google Ventures.

Divide's app on iOS and Android is built around the company's BYOD (bring your own device) mobile platform. The company's service is designed to let workers consolidate professional apps and personal apps onto the device they already have, providing encryption along the way for the business apps and data.

"Employees enjoy privacy on their personal device as well as a suite of professional-grade business apps to get work done on the go," the company's website says.

Divide provides a free basic version and a $60-per-year service with administrative controls.

Eko Disco Budget To Spend N1.3bn on Electricity Meters

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company has announced plans to roll out 360,000 electricity meters to customers who are presently being billed without meters through estimation. The project will cost N1.3bn.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, EKEDC, Mr. Oladele Amoda, told journalists in Lagos on Monday shortly after the oversight visit of the Senate Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation to the company.

The first phase of the project, according to him, will start with about 5,000 meters for all high voltage or maximum demand customers, who he said, were responsible for about 70 per cent of the company’s revenue profile.

Amoda stated that under the scheme, apart from those who did not have meters, all customers with obsolete and malfunctioning meters would also have them replaced.

Earlier in his post-privatisation update report presented to the committee, the EKEDC boss said the company had embarked on a number of measures to ensure a total turnaround in the company’s services to its customers.

WHAT IS FORGIVENESS?

Forgiveness is the intentional and voluntary process by which a victim undergoes a change in feelings and attitude regarding an offense, lets go of negative emotions such as vengefulness, with an increased ability to wish the offender well. Okonjo-Iweala Challenges African Leaders On Job Creation

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has challenged African leaders to put in place measures that will address the glaring inequalities on the continent.

The minister who spoke during one of the sessions of the World Economic Forum on Africa, identified security, unemployment and infrastructural development as one of the issues that must be prioritised if the young and vulnerable must feel the impact of government.

The minister said “we recognise that Africa is not rising for everybody; that some people are left behind” adding that “there is inequality, we have been growing and the society has become more unequal and we have realised and recognised that we are not creating enough jobs for the number of jobs needed and some have fallen off the train; those at the bottom end of the ladder”.

She further noted that “these challenges are longer term” insisting that “right now we also face the short term

China Set To Invest $4 Billion To Boost Housing In Nigeria

The Nigerian housing sector has become one of the first major beneficiaries of the World Economic Forum on Africa with Chinese investors offering the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria $4 billion to boost the nation’s housing sector.

The Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank, Mr Gimba Yau Kumo who announced the offer in Abuja said that part of the 200-man Chinese delegation would meet with his management team and other relevant government officials for final agreement on the deal.

Mr Kumo said the management of the Federal Mortgage Bank has discussed with the Minister Of Finance, Dr Okonjo-Iweala, with a view to obtain approval of the Federal Government to accept the terms of the Chinese.
