Ericsson and NYU to Drive 5G Mobile Technology

Ericsson Incorporated is exploring a new generation of wireless technologies, also known as 5G, at the New York University.

The firm has joined the NYU Wireless as an affiliate sponsor of research.
The university’s Polytechnic School of Engineering unveiled the NYU Wireless in August 2012.

Focused on mass-deployable wireless devices across a wide range of applications and markets, the NYU Wireless is the first university centre to combine wireless with computing and medical applications research.

The NYU Wireless, according to a joint statement by both organisations, includes more than 20 faculty members and 100 graduate students from the NYU School of Engineering Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, the NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the NYU Langone School of Medicine.

“We are pleased to have Ericsson join the NYU Wireless industrial affiliate programme and welcome its participation,” the NYU Wireless Director and Founder, Prof. Theodore Rappaport, said, adding that, “Our students will benefit from working alongside this global innovator and leader in network infrastructure technology and wireless services.”

The statement also quoted the Director of Wireless Access Networks Research at Ericsson Research, Dr. Magnus Frodigh, as saying, “We see the NYU Wireless as an important partner in the research towards the development of global 5G standards.

“Academia and industry are currently ramping up the research efforts, and we expect that the collaboration with the NYU Wireless students and faculty will not only contribute with solid research results, but also generate creativity, insights and requirements from the highly dynamic and innovative United States wireless marketplace.”

Ericsson, according to the statement, is the ninth major international technology firm to join the NYU Wireless as an affiliate sponsor.
