PASTOR ENOCH ADEJARE ADEBOYE (ONE IN A MILLENIUM)

BACKGROUND OF PASTOR ENOCH ADEJARE ADEBOYE

Born on March 2nd 1942 to Moses Adeboye, a farmer and part-time traditional musician, and Esther Adeboye, a trader in locust beans, Enoch's poor parental background painted a grim picture of a child that  would be confined to the peasant life. But the little lad, whose father had migrated to Ilesha now in Osun State in Nigeria to settle, had a different agenda for his life. Enoch was registered at St. Stephen's Anglican Primary School, Ifewara to begin his primary education.
Brilliant, calm and reticent with amiable primness, his teachers had no doubt that the lad had a scholarly aura and a cut for the academic event at that tender age.
It was therefore, not surprising that young Enoch Adeboye soon gained admission into Ilesha Grammar School. But therein lay the acid test and indeed a gulf to cross. The bruising truth was that Enoch's tall ambition to pursue an academic dream in a high school was irreconcilable with the abject poverty of Moses, his father.

Destiny indeed smiled on Adeboye as Moses and his wife were compelled to sell their few cherished possessions and borrowed from kind neighbours to ensure that their son's dream took a step towards a practical reality. And so, Enoch landed at Ilesha Grammar School. And the little chap soon began to see a grey light of dawn on a horizon. In school, his closest companions were poverty and hunger. But he carried his pains with stoical poise. He never had a fat wallet but he sure had a fat will. And so he resolved to work hard to succeed and to lift his parents from the despicable dungeon of poverty. He almost did. But this noble dream was fractured while he was in his final year. The sad news sneaked in that solemn afternoon: Moses his father was dead. It was shocking and traumatic news.
Led by his principal, Adeboye returned home to pay his last respect to his father and went back to school same day to face his exams; his mind blurred by the interrupting memory of his father's freezing silence.
Adeboye finished his secondary school career, winning prizes for the best student. However, on the prize-giving day, the pain of poverty once again loomed. At the ripe age of 18, it dawned on him that he had neither a pair of trousers nor a pair of shoes, even if ugly, to wear to the prize giving ceremony. He borrowed a pair of shoes and pants from a relative. Even though they were the wrong sizes, and he must have looked awkward and ludicrous in them, he wore them with pride to pick his prize. This poverty for him must be the spur in his quest to be a paragon of success in life.
Enoch taught briefly at a local school before gaining admission into the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN). Here, he joined the volleyball team, not so much because of his love for sports but because of some free meals. The Nigeria civil war jeopardized his career at UNN. The Ifewara lad later obtained his bachelors degree from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU).
Enoch, now caressing the sunny side of life, soon obtained his Masters degree, and a PH.D in Hydro-Dynamics from the University of Lagos at the youthful age of 30. His whole ambition now was to be the youngest University Vice Chancellor in Africa
But Adeboye's ambition was short lived; for he would soon have his own 'burning bush' experience. One of his daughters became ill and orthodox medicine proved ineffective. This was in 1973. A cousin had invited him and his wife to a church, The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), to seek divine healing for their daughter.
What the Mathematics Teacher and his adorable wife did not know, and could not have imagined, as they stepped out of their house that day was that they had begun to walk into God's ultimate plan for their lives.
Adeboye could not understand why this bunch of illiterate preachers felt he had to surrender his life to Jesus Christ in order to overcome his afflictions. “What do these ones know about the philosophy and psychology of religions?” he thought to himself.

Finally the Word of God penetrated, and on July 29, 1973, sobbing like a baby, Mr. Adeboye ran to the altar to accept Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour.

Radical Zeal

The young convert received a divine touch, and peace returned to his life. As he heard the message of complete holiness, he decided to live by the Word. He rarely missed church services. He started reading the Bible after he found out that the mostly illiterate members of the church had better grasp than him. He decided to take Sunday School very seriously and pay attention to the weekly memory verses.

A Living Witness

From the moment he gave his life to Christ, Pastor Adeboye eagerly shared the gospel. His colleagues and students at the University of Lagos were the primary targets of his evangelical zeal. His passion to win souls for Jesus led him to reach out to members of his extended family, and neighbours. In 1977, Pastor Adeboye paid 15 years rent to hire a cocoa warehouse in Ifewara, for use as a branch of RCCG.

The Mantle Falls

As Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi grew old, the issue of his successor crept up. But before he passed on to glory on November 2, 1980, at the age of 71, he had left a clear statement about who the Lord had chosen to succeed him. Pastor E. A. Adeboye, was the choice. He and his wife began to desperately cry to God to let the cup pass over him. But in January 1981, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye became the new leader of the church.
Coming from the ivory tower to a modest apartment in Mushin, a densely populated area of Lagos, was like falling from grace to grass. But that turned out to be the beginning of a new thing. The new leader's modesty would not permit him to be called Reverend or General Superintendent, so he changed his title to Pastor, and his designation to General Overseer. The vision which God dropped in the heart of an unlettered man began to blossom in the hands of the scholar. From 40 parishes, which he inherited in 1981, the Church now has more than 15,000 parishes in more than 100 countries.
Pastor Adeboye's delivery of the gospel is unique. Points follow one another in a logical sequence, as if he is proving a mathematical theory. He is also a giant in prayer and worship. He spends hours with the God whose message he bears daily. As a Pastor, strict discipline and unusual hard work strike a balance in his caring heart.

Mummy G.O., Pastor Folu Adeboye, wife of the General Overseer is a strong pillar and efficient planner that complements the efforts of her husband. She is endowed with immense initiative, and great capacity for hard work. Her attributes have helped the G.O. to obey God's command to be great.

THE MINISTRY

Pastor Adeboye had his B.Sc. in Mathematics at Obafemi Awolowo University and subsequently got his PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Lagos, and worked as a lecturer in mathematics at the universities of Lagos and Ilorin; After joining the RCCG, he began working to translate the sermons of its then Pastor and founder, Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, from Yoruba into English.
In 1981 Adeboye was appointed General Overseer of the church, taking over from Papa Akindayomi, who had died the previous year. For three years he filled the role part-time, still lecturing at Ilorin, until giving up his university position to preach full-time.
The church, which was not well known before Adeboye took charge, now claims branches in over a hundred countries, including more than 14,000 in Nigeria. Adeboye has stated that his aim is to put a church within five minutes of every person on Earth. He is the national president of RCF (an interdenominational fellowship in all the campuses in Nigeria). In 2008, Newsweek magazine named Adeboye one of the fifty most powerful people in the world. He is married to Foluke Adeboye, also a pastor, with whom he has children.
He recently endowed 4 Nigerian Universities: Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria with Professorial chairs in Mathematics to the tune of 50 Million Naira.

ACHIEVEMENT

1.     On 18th December 1998, Enoch Adeboye hosted the very first Holy Ghost Festival (open air meeting) in Nigeria with an attendance of over seven million people (CNN estimate). This most ambitious project in the form of an open air Worship Service was carried out in Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria and in attendance were over seven million people as confirmed by the CNN aerial satellite. Not one person was lost or died in that throng and this feat was repeated the following year. In 1999 though, there were no less than twelve million worshipers present. This program has since been replaced with the annual 3-day Holy Ghost Congress held every December at the Redemption Camp. In addition to this is a Special 3-day Holy Ghost Program held in the first weekend of March yearly. At each and every one of these events, miracles, signs and wonders have become commonplace as the power of God moves freely to set free, heal, anoint, deliver, bless and empower.

2.     Enoch Adeboye’s trade mark of humility is disarming and this endears him to people, enabling him to easily share his testimony of the Gospel. His passion for soul-winning feeds his passion for church-planting and through this, countless thousands have been inspired to follow him and likewise serve the Lord in the ministry. From that unimpressive building he walked into in 1973, the Lord has today through Enoch Adeboye built a Mission of over five thousand Churches all over the world (Nigeria, almost all the nations of Africa, the US, the UK, Canada, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Australia, India, China, Hong Kong, the Far East and even the Middle East). In the United States alone there are over five hundred Parishes and still increasing.

3.     For several years, he has been honored to serve as Pastor and / or spiritual counselor to Heads of States, Ministers, political leaders and national decision-makers. At the same time, he endeavors to travel to minister in unreached places where others will not go.

TESTIMONIES FROM PASTOR ENOCH ADEJARE ADEBOYE

SOMEBODY SHOUT HALLELUYAH!!! This is amazing. read and pass on. then meditate and wait for God's abounding blessings. God is powerful. He will bless you all.

1. A Dump Child Speaks

(GO) A woman brought her child. That child will probably be between 9 and 10. And said this child had never spoken before please pray for this child. (GO) I laid my hand on this child and I said, In the Name of Jesus and the child said 'Amen!' I have not prayed yet! I just said: In the Name of Jesus! And the child that had never spoken before said 'Amen! I nearly jumped out of the window. The mother was on the floor rolling! That kind of miracle that will make you roll on the ground for joy God will give you this year! (Amen!)

2. Divine Promotion

(GO) Once upon a time when I was a lecturer in one University I won't mention which one; there was a particular man who was not promoted for 12 years because somebody hid his file. But when his time came there was a change of Head of Department and the new Head of Department said I want to see the file of everybody in my Department. They searched and searched until finally they dug it out where somebody hid it.. Your file that had been hidden by the enemy shall be brought out this year. (Amen!) And they discovered this man should have been promoted at least twice and they gave him double promotion.

      3. Sick Woman Healed

(GO) I was invited to Port Harcourt , Nigeria . Full Gospel Business men had a program, they asked me to come and preach. When I finished the first preaching that night one man came and said sir, my wife is sick, in hospital; please could you come and pray for her. So we made arrangement for the following day. The following day we went there. The wife had been completely helpless on the sick bed, she could not even turn but I prayed for her and the one who had not been able to even talk escorted me to the door! I didn't come to Port Harcourt for this man! I came for a program, heaven was just passing by and this man tapped into it! Heaven is passing by tonight, somebody is going to tap into it and your sickness will disappear. If you believe that let me hear you say 'Amen!' (Amen!)

      4. Marriage made Possible

(GO) A sister came to one of the Programs in Ebute Metta, Lagos years ago, and the Word came just as it is coming now that there is a sister whose mother didn't want her to marry. That if the mother does not release her, Mama herself will be buried within 7 days. A Word just came like that and I announced it. I don't know which sister was concerned. The following day the sister came with the mother. The mother was very furious. That's the way you stupid prophets spoil the head of our girls, telling my daughter that I will die because I didn't allow her to marry. I said me? Sister did I say that? She said the prophecy that came yesterday. What God said is that there is a sister here did I mention your name? I said Mama don't mind her, nobody mentioned her name, she was just claiming what is not her own.

The mother said, oh-oh is that so? She said, all right. She asked the lady to go out and the lady went out and she said Pastor, but is it true that the mother will die? I said I'm not talking about you oh I'm not talking about you, but what God told me is going to come to pass, so if you are the one and I'm not saying it is you before the week runs out whoever it is, is going to be buried. Ehhhh, I'm not asking her not to marry but who is going to take care of me after. I said Mama that's simple; I can tell her and tell the husband to take good care of you. I will make them promise. That's if she can marry within 6 months, this girl who was almost 40 years old and nobody had looked in her direction before, there is somebody here today anybody who says you will not marry will not see the end of January because loneliness must end!

      5. Little Girl Delivered from Death

(GO) I went to visit a family and at that time I didn't know that the woman of the house was a number one witch and that she had reached an agreement with her husband in the spirit realm that of every two children born one will die one will survive. And there was this little girl that she had given birth to. She was one of those that were to die. In fact that was the day that the girl was to die. We didn't know at that time so we went there to greet the family and as I was about to leave that girl stretched forward towards me. She was at the back of the mother stretched out, stretched towards me in such a manner as I had not option other than to carry the child. We were to learn later that this child never, never allows anyone else to carry her. But something told the girl, you are dying today unless just stretched towards me so I carried the girl and I prayed. I didn't know what I was doing: Father bless this child, keep sickness away from her, keep death away from this child
. And the yoke was broken! It wasn't long after that when the mother began to confess: I killed this one, I killed this one, I killed this one, I killed this one the day I was to kill this one he this troublesome pastor came by and took the child from me. Today every one of you that the enemy had decided death for I cancel that one in Jesus' Name! (Amen!)

        6. No More Sorrow

(GO) There's a young man that had been coming from America again and again to testify. When I first met him, old as he was, he was always weeping like a baby. He's married; he's got children but he's always weeping! My wife used to say before you begin to weep again don't start oh! Because he had known so much sorrow. The father left home when he was a child one sorrow after the other but now it is one miracle after the other. He was telling his church people, because he's a Pastor, he said, some how since I met Pastor Adeboye it's one miracle after the other! One miracle after the other!

       7. Blessed with a Baby

(GO) We went to a Holy Ghost Service in Kaduna , Nigeria and I wanted to go to the toilet while the choir was singing and there was this brother who was an usher standing somewhere near the toilet. So he greeted me and I shook hands with him. I didn't know he was rejoicing.. So I went to the toilet. Apparently he has told the other ushers. He shook my hand, he shook my hand! When I was coming back there were about half a dozen of them! So I shook hands with them. I didn't know that one of them had received one before he shook my hand the second time and he put his hand in his pocket. He got home and he told the wife who had been barren for years bring your stomach, the GO shook my hand 2 times! 9 months later the baby came. Your hands will be blessed tonight! (Amen!) I say Your hands will be blessed tonight! (Amen!)
